IRS Form 2290 is Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return which is circulated by the Department of the treasury, Internal Services Revenue of the United States of America. Step 1: You can download the IRS Form 2290 from the official website of Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service.
Step 2: Write your Name, Employer identification number and address on the blank fields at the top of the form.
Step 3: Check the option which is applicable for you and proceed to Part I. On line 1, if your vehicle was on the public highways answer yes and if it was not on public highways, then proceed to page 3 of the form. The entry on line 2 must me calculated on page 2. Enter the additional tax form increase in taxable gross weight on line 3. On line 4, add the value you after adding line 2 and line 3. On line 5, enter the amount of credits. Enter the balance due on line 6, which is calculated by subtracting line 5 from line 4.
Step 4: Start filling up Part II. On line 7 select the appropriate declaration choice. From line 8 to line 9 you can easily write the vehicle related information. Below Part II there are other blank fields to be filled up using the Designee and Preparers information. Next you will see a table to calculate tax on your vehicles depending on the type and size of the vehicle. On Partial period tax (a) column, you have to enter the tax of only vehicles except logging. On the (b) column, you have to enter the tax of the logging vehicles. Enter the number of vehicles in each category on the next column and write the result on the last column.
Step 5: Below the Part II, there is a table for Schedule I, here on Part I have to mention all the details of your heavy vehicles. You have to mention the vehicle identification number and the type of heavy vehicle used in categories. On Part II you have to summarize all the details given above. On Part II line a, you have to mention the total number of reported vehicles. On line b you have to mention the total number of taxable vehicles and no line c, you have to mention the number of total vehicles. To get the number of taxable vehicles on line c, you have to subtract line b from line a. There is another table on the next page which serves the same purpose, but it is included in case you can’t mention all your vehicles on the first table.
Step 6: On the next page you have to certify the Consent of Disclosure with your signature and other details. This part of the form is an assurance that all the information provided are authentic. The last part called the Payment Voucher; here you have to mention the payment details. You can detach this part of the form as evidence if needed in the future.
