Why You Still Need a Professional Cover Letter

We're in an age of online applications. It's very rare to find someone CV-dropping, and even rarer to see it work. Companies prefer advertising online and making their recruiting process as convenient for themselves as possible. Because of this, you're going to need to be able to write a professional cover letter to gain the attention of the companies you apply to.

Knowing how to write a professional cover letter is vital in today's job market. Even on job searching sites such as Indeed, you have the option to "add a message", which really means adding a cover letter to your CV which is downloaded from the site by the employer.

By writing a professional cover letter to attach to your job application, you're allowing an employer to get a taste of the person you are. Your cover letter can make or break your application, so you've got to be able to write one correctly. In the next section, we'll introduce you to the sections of great professional cover letter examples, breaking it all down, and making writing a cover letter easier for you.

What a Professional Cover Letter Should Contain

Here, we'll expand on a few key elements that you should include in your professional cover letter. It's not a professional cover letter template, per se, but you will be able to use the noted sections to start writing a professional cover letter from scratch.

• Begin with contact information. Yours and the company's contact information should be the address headers of your professional cover letter. It should look a little like this:

"Your Name
Address Line 1
Address Line 2
Address Line 3
Postcode
Phone Number
Email

Company Manager
Company Name
Address Line 1
Address Line 2
Address Line 3
Postcode
Phone Number
Email

Day/Month/Year"

• Write to a person. If you can't find the name of an individual or manager to direct your cover letter to, call the company, and ask. You cover letter should start like this:

"Dear Mr. Bloggs,"

• Subject line. A subject line is used to direct the letter or email reader's attention to the reason behind the letter before they read the whole page. It should look like this:

"Re: Team Leader position at Retailers Inc."

• First paragraph. Your first paragraph should explain why you're writing to the company, and why you might be a good fit for the position you're applying for. For example:

"I am writing to express interest in the Team leader position at Retailers Incorporated. I firmly believe that the skills and the experience that I have gained in my current position as a Retail Team Leader at Socks Co. would make me an ideal candidate for this position."

• Second paragraph. The second paragraph of your professional cover letter should outline your skills and experience which you can relate to the job position that you're applying for.

"I have a few years of experience in leadership roles, along with training in leadership skills and management. I am a confident individual with efficient self-management skills, and an ability to motivate my team members even when business is quiet."

• Third paragraph. The third paragraph you write should point out your attributes, further outlining your experiences, your talents, what you're good at, and what makes you an effective employee.

"With my positive attitude to work and great organisational skills, I can quickly complete any tasks I am given. I am known to frequently exceed what is expected of me, and I perform well under pressure."

• Closing paragraph. A closing paragraph is used to briefly note how much you would enjoy working for this new company, remind them what you can offer them, and outline the effort you're willing to put into your work.

"I feel this role with Retailers Inc. would allow me to grow further as an employee and expand on my skills. I'd like to head down a career path that could further help me benefit your company, and I am willing to tackle any training you deem necessary head-on from the start of my contract."

• Closing statement. Your closing statement should inform the reader that you hope to speak to them soon or wish them well. Finally, simply sign-off with your name.

"I hope to hear from you soon to discuss my application further.

Warm regards,
Your Name."

Using these professional cover letter examples, you should easily be able to write a professional cover letter from beginning to end with no issues.
