Mistakes to Avoid Making Your Cover Letter Look Like a Professional One

In this section of our guide, we'll be covering a few common mistakes that are made in cover letters and how to correct them.

  • Grammar and spelling errors. These are the most common mistakes that are made in cover letters. A cover letter with errors in it is not what a cover letter looks like when you're applying for a professional position. Take a moment to check over your cover letter once you've written it or get yourself better grammar-checking software.
  • Sending a generic cover letter. Employers can tell when you're using a cover letter template or sending them a generic cover letter that you could send to apply for any job position. Employers know what a cover letter should look like, and they won't be fooled.
  • Getting the manager's name wrong. It's easy to call up a company and ask for the manager's name so that you can properly send your job application. If you're doubtful of what the manager's name is, or how to spell it, you can either call or look on their website
  • Using a greeting that is outdated. The absolute worst opening salutation you can use on a cover letter is "To Whom It May Concern". There are many alternatives, including using the manager's title, their name, or simply directing the cover letter towards "Sir or Madame".
  • Long cover letters. At most, a cover letter should be 500 words or a page long. If you're over that, you may be including far too much information. Considering cutting your letter down.

Dear Ms. Bell

Re: Supervisor position

I am writing to express interest in the open Supervisor position at your company, Keys and Kettles. I firmly believe that the skills and the experience that I have gained in my current position as a Retail Team Leader at Boxed Kitchen would make me an ideal candidate for this role.

I have several years of experience in leadership roles, as well as training in leadership skills, team building, and management. I am a confident individual with efficient organisational skills, and an ability to motivate my team members even when business is quiet.

With my positive attitude to work and ability to think outside of the box, I can quickly complete any tasks I am given; no matter how time consuming or challenging. I am known to frequently exceed what is expected of me, and I perform well under pressure.

I feel this role with Keys and Kettles. would allow me to grow further as a leader and expand on my skills. I'd like to keep climbing up this career path I've set myself on, while benefitting your company along the way. I am willing to tackle any training you deem necessary head-on from the start of my contract, and I would love to speak to you about some ideas I have on team efficiency.

I hope to hear from you soon to discuss my application further.

Warm regards,
Your Name

In this cover letter, there are several elements that would catch the attention of a potential employer:

  1. The formatting, which is clean and concise.
  2. The use of the employer's name, which requires research to find, as it's not often on the job advert.
  3. The expression of interest, written in a professional way.
  4. The relation between the applicant's current job role and the one they're applying for.
  5. The applicant's experience and skill highlights, which fit nicely with the job they're applying for.
  6. The way the applicant points out that they want to help the company by being employed with them, rather than elsewhere. This shows a clear interest in the position.
  7. The call for action, asking for the employer to consider conversing with them about the position.
  8. The sign-off, which wishes the employer a good day, and would use the applicant's full name.

These points all makeup what a cover letter should look like. Cover letters are clear, to the point, reader-friendly documents that highlight your strengths and show your professionalism and drive for the job. Nothing more, nothing less.
