To compress a PDF file on Mac, you need to download Wondershare PDFelement for Mac. It is compatible with Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite), 10.11 (El Capitan) 10.12 (Sierra) and will support the upcoming macOS High Sierra. Once you have downloaded it, install on your Mac and launch it under Applications ready for use. From there you can now follow these steps.

Step 1. Import the PDF You Want to Compress

Opening PDF file using this program is simple. On the program window, navigate the cursor to the bottom right and click on the "Open File" button. This will allow you access your local folders. Now search for the large PDF file you want to compress and open it with PDFelement.

Step 2. Edit Your PDF Document (Optional)

Next, you can edit your PDF file. Click on the "Edit" button on the toolbar. A formatting toolbar appears with several editing options. To edit texts, navigate the cursor to a text field you want to modify texts. Double click on it and start editing files.

Still on the "Edit" option, you will be able to modify images. Move the cursor to a page you want to modify or add image and double click on it for modification.

Step 3. Perform PDF Compression on Mac

After editing your PDF file and you are impressed you can now compress it. Go to "File" on the main menu. On the drop down menu that appears click on "Optimize PDF". Choose an ideal compression level and check the quality output by clicking on "Preview". Finally, if you are impressed you can then click on "Save As" and rename your PDF file.
